Re-teaching of expectations around attendance

general announcement

At the start of every school year we teach students about the importance of being on time to class and explain how being tardy to any of their six periods, throughout the day, has a huge impact on their learning.  Tardies are always entered in the attendance record for parents to see (through family access) and discuss with their students.

On Wednesday this week, during our BBT class, students were informed that with effect from Monday November 14 2022 any student with 7 or more tardies in a single week (across all periods) will receive a lunch detention. If a student continues to exceed 7 tardies in any subsequent week, they will then be assigned after school detention.

We are asking our families to support this policy by discussing the following attendance expectations with their students this weekend or whenever they see lateness in their student's attendance record:

•Students are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings.

•Students are expected to manage their 5-minute passing period appropriately so that they can arrive to class on-time.

•If students need more than the 5-minute passing period to handle business, they must check-in with their teacher first and get permission to come to class late.

•If students will arrive late, and the tardy is excused (for example, they were working with another staff member), they will be given a written hall pass.

If you realize your student will be late on a morning for the start of the school day, please contact the Attendance Office to excuse their absence. Email: blmsattendance@issaquah.wednet.edu  Tel: 425-837-4157
