Basketball Information Letter
Beaver Lake Middle School Basketball
Varsity and Junior Varsity Team
Coach: Pat Dinsmore & Carolyn Santos
Welcome to the winter sports season at Beaver Lake Middle School. I am very excited for the season and look forward to helping all players continue to develop their skills. Every girl who participates will have the opportunity to play on game days. It is my goal to help all players improve and enjoy playing the game of basketball. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Below you will find some general information about practice, games and expectations. Thank you for giving your child the opportunity to get involved with a Beaver Lake Middle school sport this year!
- All participants must have a completed sports registration and pay the sports fee in order to participate in practices and games. Registration is on the BLMS website under student life-athletics. All email communications with parents and players will be through the Final Forms platform.
- Tryouts start Monday (Nov 6th and or M,T,W) and it is important that you attend during tryouts. Your team placement is based on your skill level, game knowledge, ability to be coached, and commitment to practicing and game attendance. There is Varsity, JV, and intramurals. If you are interested in intramurals, you do not need to try out. Intramurals will begin in a week or two – TBD. You’ll be informed by an email and/or school announcement.
- Practices will begin at 2:45 and will end at 4:00 p.m., except Wednesdays – 3:45 to 5:00 p.m.
- It is important participants attend practices, especially the practice before a game. If a player is absent from school it is considered an excused absence from basketball. If a player is at school and doesn’t attend practice it is unexcused with the exception of medical appointments. It is very important that a parent email me with your absence. I understand that some of you will be playing in dual sports or on another basketball team so please let me know (by a parent) if there is a scheduling conflict with attending a practice. Participants will need to help the coaches prepare the court before and clean up after both practices and games. It will take about 10 min. to clear the gym after our last game.
- Please have transportation available for your child immediately following our practices and games. Your child needs to be picked-up by 4:10 (Wed. – 5:10) on practice days. The activity bus will leave BLMS at 4:20, Wed. - it leaves at 5:07. It has a limited route and that information is available on our website’s athletic page.
- The 1st game starts at 3:30 and finishes around 4:30. The 2nd game starts soon after it, once the 10-15 min. warm up is complete. Due to the distance of Maywood M.S. – games may start and end a little bit later than usual.
- Buses will be provided for all away matches. If your daughter is returning to Beaver Lake after a game she may call you from her cell phone when the bus is a few minutes away from school so you’re prepared to pick her up upon are arrival.
- If your daughter is riding home with you from an away game, you must check her out first with the coach before leaving. If your child is riding home from an away game with another parent you need to provide the coach with a signed parent note.
- Participants need to wear appropriate athletic attire and shoes for practices and games. PE clothes or athletic wear is acceptable.
- All participants must have passing grades in all classes and be respectful, responsible students.
- If a participant needs to leave early from practice they must notify a coach before practice.
- Locker rooms will remain locked until the end of practice/games. Please plan ahead if you are leaving early because coaches will not be able to open the locker room while practice or games are occurring.
Coaches, players, officials make mistakes. We are all human after all. Positive cheering from the sidelines is encouraged. Individual coaching and analysis of game performance is a positive way to encourage growth and learn from mistakes. Coaches will not talk to parents about playing time or game strategy. They will be happy to talk about a player’s needs, strengths, weaknesses, and school.
We have certain expectations of the players that will help to shape and propel the team forward:
- Every player is a member of the team. Be a great teammate. Be respectful to all our players in the Bulldog program. We win as a team and we lose as a team. A positive attitude and sportsmanship are critical elements to the success of the team. A player who possesses or brings a bad attitude that hinders or is a detriment to the team or another individual will meet with the coaches to determine their future status on the team.
- Practice to get better each day - just don’t go to practice, but go to work hard at practice. Everybody wants to win, but not all are willing to work to win. Be a worker.
- Compete like a Champion, do all the little things Champions do. Be humble, gracious in victory, and proud of your effort in defeat.
- Represent our School, our Team, your Teammates, your Parents with Honor and Pride.
- Every player must have the appropriate athletic attire and shoes for practices and games. Dress like a b-ball player: socks, shoes, full T-shirt for practices, hair pulled back. Players are issued a uniform jersey/ shorts and should supply their own shin height socks. The uniform must be returned cleaned at the end of the season free of any damage. A fine or fee will result if not returned or needs to be replaced due to damage.
Thank you for your support in helping make this program successful and fun!
